Solar Energy Systems – A Key Element Of Electricity Supply For Businesses

Image: A recently completed Centreco Solar Energy System for a client in Preston (293kW)

Centreco have installed over 200 solar energy systems for companies across the U.K. with over 30MW of generation capacity, saving over 6,000 Tonnes of CO2 per annum and delivering immediate electricity cost savings to their clients.

Centreco installed its first system in 2014 when commercial electricity prices we in the region of 12p per kilowatt hour. With increasing electricity prices over the years, to an average circa 35p per kilowatt hour currently and an ever-increasing environmental pressures on businesses so solar energy systems have cemented their place in the energy supply chain for an increasing number of mid to high users of electricity.

Centreco believe this trend for on-site solar energy systems for UK businesses is set to accelerate. Tom Knox, Business Development Director at Centreco says “I consult with over fifty commercial clients a month, there is a common set of themes with each of them – how can we reduce our electricity costs, reduce our exposure to electricity price inflation in the long-term and address the pressing environmental concerns on our operations.

Self generated solar energy worked in commercial terms when electricity pricing was 12p per kilowatt hour, so it certainly works at the rates we are seeing in the market now and indeed under any scenario that may prevail across the 25-year warranted generation cycle of a solar energy system.

Indications are that grid-based electricity prices will continue to rise from present rates in the near term and that long term inflation on these prices is inherent given the macro and supply issues at play for the UK. To that end installing a solar energy system now not only makes sense but I would say is essential for any business that uses more than 100,000kW hours of electricity per annum.

In the unlikely event that electricity prices fall in the short term such are the funding structures readily available to finance a system, clients will get immediate cost savings, a positive cash flow profile and high long-term returns from their Centreco solar energy system almost irrespective of any foreseeable strike price for a commercial electricity contract rate as the equivalent fixed price of electricity generated by a solar energy system will be in the range of only 2 to 4 pence per kilowatt hour over the 25 year period.

It makes more sense than ever to push the button now on the move to solar energy from a financial perspective.

Add to this the environmental benefits self-generated solar energy can bring to a company’s ESG strategy and supply chain sustainability credentials and you really do have a no-brainer business decision to bring solar energy into the energy mix for a UK business with relatively energy intense operations such as manufacturing, data processing, engineering, industrial, production and fabrication.”

It looks as if the Government concurs with Tom Knox, a recent report entitled “Mission Zero” highlighted solar energy as a 70GW market by 2035. The report sees a “solar energy roof top revolution” taking place in the coming years with commercial solar energy systems playing a key part in the hyper-growth of renewable energy deployment in the UK. With 5Bn square metres of commercial roof space available to fill in the UK with high quality solar energy systems its easy to understand why this generation solution for businesses will play a key part in the Country’s energy strategy in the long term.

Centreco have been steadily growing their installation resources and are all set to install in excess of 40MW of new solar energy generation for clients in the twelve months. Centreco will be at the forefront of delivering this burgeoning commercial solar energy capacity in the UK and will guide clients through the modelling, design and installation processes to offer a one stop shop for a business looking to take advantage of self-generated solar energy at their site.

With new highly skilled energy consultants, project development resources and installation teams in place Centreco have the capacity to work with a client’s to demonstrate the potential of their own solar energy system today.

So, if you’re a business owner and you are interested in finding out how a solar energy system can work for your commercial property, why not give Centreco a call on 01257 208 943 and be part of that solar energy revolution!

  • Development teams growing to deliver further expansion for Centreco

Centreco, a market leading provider of solar energy systems to businesses in the U.K., have delivered 9.6MW of new renewable energy generation capacity across the first six months of their financial year.

This represents a three-fold increase in installed capacity year on year being driven by increased demand from businesses with escalating energy costs and environmental pressures addressed by the financial benefits of a Centreco solar energy system, which delivers immediate payback and long-term cost savings, combined with substantially reducing CO2 emissions.

Centreco have invested heavily in bolstering their operational capacity across the U.K. in the last twelve months to meet this increased demand with additional installation teams recruited and trained, backed by new in-house scaffolding, logistics and project management resources.

The business sees this growth rate continuing at pace with over 30MW of installations already committed from their clients over the coming months. This is aligned to Centreco further developing its project delivery teams to meet this run-rate and to allow for significant further incremental expansion during 2023.

Adrian Dunleavy, Chairman of Centreco, says “the business is well positioned being a dedicated provider of solar energy systems for companies that are mid to high end users of electricity in their facilities. This sector has been hit by energy cost increases and continued sustainability pressures on their operations and self-generated solar energy is the perfect solution to address these demands.

For example, the capacity brought to the market by Centreco just in the last six months will deliver 1,300 Tonnes of CO2 savings per annum, in excess of £50 Million of electricity cost savings over the next 25 years with clients benefitting from an equivalent price hedge of only 4.5 pence per kilowatt hour versus the commercial market average at 35.0 pence per kilowatt hour today.

The Centreco proposition is a compelling offer, and we are pleased to be able to bring an increasing number of solar energy systems on stream to drive down cost and reduce emissions for businesses across the United Kingdom.”

Jon Williams, Managing Director of Centreco, says “we offer a full turnkey solution for our business clients with design, modelling, logistics, installation and project management all being undertaken through in house resources. To that end we have invested in the recruitment and training of new staff, in capital equipment and resources and the development of our systems to meet the increasing demand and maintain our quality installation processes.

We are seeing these Operations delivering now with installations undertaken across 43 sites over these past six months. Centreco continue to invest in our reach with a further increased number of installation teams coming through over the next few months building capacity to deliver accelerated growth bolstered by a strong forward book of confirmed projects.

Longer term demand looks strong with the financial pressures of electricity usage forecast to continue and environmental considerations increasing within supply chains a growing number of operations will be looking to self-generated sustainable power as a way of countering these factors.

Centreco are building our client services and development teams to work alongside new clients to release the potential of their redundant roof space and develop their own solar energy installations with our help. Our aim is to be the largest provider of solar energy systems to businesses in the UK and Centreco look forward to being able to work with an increasing number of leading UK businesses over the coming months.”

Centreco (UK) Limited, leading UK commercial solar energy system installers, announce the completion of a 21kW Solar Panel System for Diamond Interiors, the high-quality specialist commercial workspace design and fit out Company, at their premises in Wigan.

As relatively light users of electricity, it was important that any solar installation had a strong commercial case for Diamond. To achieve this, Centreco designed and installed a bespoke solar energy system consisting of 54 roof mounted tier one panels. Prior to installing the system, Centreco analysed Diamond’s electricity usage profile and designed this specification system to ensure they use as much of the electricity generated as possible with minimal being sold back to the grid in order to maximise returns. This alongside the utilisation of prime facing roof space allowed for a system providing maximum efficiency and an even panel layout.

With electricity costs on the rise, Diamond Interiors, are able to benefit from equivalent fixed electricity costs of just 6.7p per kWh projected over the next 25 years. This offers a substantial saving against grid supplied electricity rates currently available and protects against long-term inflationary pressures on energy costs. This being more critical than ever as more SMEs across the UK feel the knock-on effects of the current energy crisis.

Nick Pollitt, Managing Director of Diamond Interiors said “Like many companies across the UK, we were really starting to feel the effects of rising energy prices and we knew we had to explore options that would provide some stability over this. We came across Centreco and the whole process was so nice and easy, that to be honest I never explored any other installers, as I felt I didn’t have to. Centreco really understood our business and the commercial case they presented provided so many opportunities for long term savings and allowed us to truly demonstrate our commitment to creating a greener future for the company.

Chris Duffy, Energy Consultant at Centreco said “As with most businesses in the UK, Diamond Interiors were impacted by the ongoing energy crisis and were keen to gain some long-term electricity cost savings and improve their environmental credentials further. Despite Diamond not being the largest energy consumer, a Solar Energy System from Centreco will still make compelling commercial sense with us using the latest design techniques and panel layout to ensure that the client is using a high proportion of the electricity generated by the installation.”

  • CO2 emissions savings of over 171 Tonnes across the next 25 years
  • Equivalent Electricity costs slashed to 4.2p per kW Hour for the long term
  • Grant awarded by Coventry & Warwickshire Green Business Programme towards cost

Leading UK commercial solar energy installers, Centreco (UK) Limited, announce the completion of a 32kW Solar Panel System for Cherwell at their premises in Southam, Warwickshire. The solar energy system consisting of 84 roof mounted tier one panels will allow Cherwell to generate their own green electricity. The system is predicted to save over 171 Tonnes of CO2 emissions over the next 25 years, allowing the leading supplier of hygiene, catering, and cleaning products to significantly reduce their carbon footprint. These CO2 savings are equivalent to 431,481 miles driven by an average passenger car.

The move to self-generated solar energy ensures Cherwell’s focus on a green future for the company, meeting their client’s environmental demands and constituting the next major stage of their sustainability plans. As consumers place more importance on green credentials, it was vital for Cherwell that every aspect of their operations are as green and efficient as possible.

For Cherwell, the project was also financially focussed as they were keen to benefit from the exceptional cost saving opportunities that a solar energy system from Centreco delivers. To achieve this, Centreco designed, installed, and optimised a bespoke system for the client. Cherwell are now able to benefit from equivalent fixed electricity costs of just 4.2p per kWh for anything they consume which is produced from their solar installation, projected over the next 25 years.  This offers a substantial saving against grid supplied electricity rates currently available and protects against long-term inflationary pressures on energy prices.

Cherwell were able to secure a grant from Coventry City Council under their ‘Coventry and Warwickshire Green Business Programme’ towards the cost of the system. Since the programme’s inception in 2016, it has awarded over £2.5m in grants to 250 SMEs (small to medium-sized enterprises) contributing to over 14,000 tonnes of CO2 savings. The Coventry and Warwickshire Green Business Programme is partly funded by the European Regional Development Fund and is being delivered by Coventry City Council and its partners.

Cherwell’s Managing Director Jeremy Hodge said “We must acknowledge the green business programme and the grant we received from the Green Business Programme as without their knowledge and support with the grant, this is a project we would have struggled to proceed with. Centreco’s industry experience meant that they were very familiar with how the grant process worked and were able to support us throughout the application process.”

Cllr Jim O’Boyle Cabinet Member for Jobs, Regeneration and Climate Change said, “I’m really pleased that our expert team was able to support Cherwell in their ambition to generate their own power and at the same time reduce their carbon emissions. Hopefully in the longer term this will also help them to stay competitive and secure jobs.”

Centreco’s Senior Project Manager Alan Cuthbert said, “Cherwell are typical of the clients we are speaking to daily in that they understand the significant environmental and commercial benefits the installation of a solar energy system brings as part of a wider sustainability programme. Whilst there are no UK wide grants currently available, it is great to see local authorities such as Coventry City Council supporting SMEs through localised grants as more companies look to save money on energy bills and maximise opportunities to reduce their carbon emissions.

As part of the grant application process, Cherwell had to seek alternative quotes from other installers, however it was great to see that after this process Centreco were able to offer the most competitive quote. At Centreco, we pride ourselves on being one of the UK’s leading commercial solar energy system installers and our ability to be most cost effective for our clients is critical to maintaining our market position.”

Reflecting on the overall installation, Jeremy Hodge further commented “We were extremely pleased with the service provided by Centreco, from initial system specification to final implementation. All was achieved within the promised timescale and budget, and we have already started to generate large savings. We would happily recommend Centreco too!”

Bernadette McCullagh, Business Advisor said “Cherwell have been an established local employer in Southam since the 1980’s and have chosen the two energy efficiency measures to implement; solar PV and LED lighting – which will have the biggest impact on their energy bills – these are really key for them to offset exponentially rising energy costs and to sustain their business for the future.

This will save them in the region of £12k a year in energy costs and nearly 11 tonnes of carbon. This project will also enable them to showcase their environmental credentials to customers, suppliers and stakeholders alike.  We are really pleased to have been able to help them along on their low carbon journey! We would like to remind businesses across Coventry and Warwickshire that the current ERDF funding will end soon. If you would like to apply for an energy audit and a green grant, please get in touch with the team as soon as possible by emailing [email protected]
